This weekend several members of the UND community will be travelling to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota for the Upper Midwest Regional meetings of the American Academy of Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, and American Schools of Oriental Research.  The UND group will join scholars and religious professionals from Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Unlike some professional conferences, the regional AAR conference is for the most part, a collegial affair.  As the primary religion conference in the region it offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to begin building their resume and important networking opportunities.   For students, faculty and religious professionals connect with friends and fellow scholars from the across the region in beautiful Minneapolis-St. Paul.

This is an especially active year for the North Dakota contingent with three faculty members and graduate student presenting and presiding in various panels.  Charles William Miller, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, will be presiding over an undergraduate session.  Troy Troftgruben , Adjunct Instructor of Religious Studies, will be presenting a paper in the New Testament: Luke-Acts session titled, The Ending of Acts:  Handing on the Baton.  Both Patrick Luber, Professor in the Department of Art and Design and myself (Ryan Stander) a Masters of Fine Arts student, will be presenting their research in the Religion, Arts and Culture session on Friday.  Luber will present his research in a paper titled, The Civil Religion of View-Master.  My paper, Desiring Place: Artists and the HGTV/Travel Channel Cultures, looks at the commodification of both home and global tourism as imaged in two artists and seeks to explore the ethics and their connection to consumerist spaces.
