Greetings from the road!

Recruitment season for The Graduate School is in full swing!  Over the past few weeks, my travels have brought me to Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, and back to Iowa.

Last weekend, Mike Hinschberger and I attended the McNair Heartland Research Conference in beautiful Kansas City, Missouri.  We arrived early last Friday and had some time to explore the area before the events kicked into full gear later that evening. The conference was held in Kansas City’s historic Country Club Plaza district.  Having never visited before, I was amazed by the beauty of the area.  The architecture reminded me of a Spanish plaza and the many shops and restaurants that lined the streets gave the area a lively atmosphere. In addition, the 80th annual Plaza Art Fair was also in full swing.  With over 240 artist displays and restaurant booths, the plaza was packed with people enjoying the beautiful art and weather.

Before heading back to the conference for the recruitment fair that evening, I purchased a beautiful hand crafted wooden cribbage board from one of the vendors.

Later that evening, Mike and I spoke with many students about the different graduate programs available at UND.  But, perhaps the most fun I had was when I ran into Geno.  The week before the McNair Conference, I was in Cedar Falls, IA at the University of Northern Iowa Graduate Fair where I met Geno. Geno is a senior at UNI and is in the process of looking into History Graduate Programs.  I was pleasantly surprised to see him for the second time in a week.  So far, Geno is in the lead for “the student I have ran into on the road the most” award.  So if you are reading this, Geno, I hope to see you at more fairs!

Stay tuned to our blog to hear more about our recruitment travel.  Next week I will be writing about the graduate fairs I will be attending in Illinois.
